Hugh and Marlene Scheffy bought this home in 2000 after deciding to downsize from their large Claremont home into a smaller home closer to downtown Los Angeles. They were already empty nesters, but they enjoyed many family celebrations and grandchildren sleep overs.
As they get ready to launch their home on the open market, Hugh and Marlene take a moment to share what they love most about 3200 Buckingham Rd.
Why did you choose this home?
We had already sold our home in Claremont and had moved to an apartment so we could take our time with the home search. We had a Mid Century home before and loved it, we didn’t want to settle for some plain boring house, here. One day we saw a real estate magazine and this home was on the cover- we knew we had to see it. The minute we walked in we knew this was the house for us. We loved the openness and the light. It was just perfect.
We also love to collect art and this home has a ton of great places to display our collection.
Do you have a favorite spot in the home?
Hugh- I love the dining room. When I sit here I feel like I am outside- there are windows on three sides and the tall barrel ceiling gives me the feeling of privacy and nature.
Marlene- I love the living room. It is still airy and light, but it feels more warm and cozy. I love lighting the fire and reading a book or listening to music in that room.
What is the best time of day in your home? Best time of year?
We love that the house changes with the sun. The way it look and feels in the morning is totally different from the way it looks and feels in the early evening. We have always lived in Mid Century homes with lots of glass… this home is different. Something about being in the canyon and the way the dining room floats amongst the trees… it is so peaceful.
Summer evenings are amazing. I don’t like being too warm, I love my air conditioning. I can have dinner in the summer, it’s still light out and I feel like I am out in nature… but the AC keeps me nice and cool. And no bugs. We’ve had long lovely dinners just talking and chatting away.
But winter evenings are also amazing- we love to light the fire and curl up with a good book, listening to music.
What might the buyer miss if they only get to visit once or twice?
Well, this is kind of funny… the laundry is nestled into a closet and the bottom of the open stairwell. Our grandkids invented this game of trying to toss dirty clothes from the top of the stairwell directly into the laundry. It sounds much easier than it is and it has become a game we all enjoy!
They also might miss the stained glass in the garage. We have no idea why it’s there, but we think it’s pretty neat.
What do you like best about your neighborhood?
We are so close to everything! A few minutes down Chevy Chase and we have Smart and Final and Von’s. There is also Buko’s (Japenese) and Skaaf’s (Lebanese). A few minutes up Chevy Chase and we are in La Canada with Gelson’s and Von’s. I have three different Trader Joe’s to choose from depending on my mood and what else I might need to do.
We love to visit downtown LA for all the arts, performances and museums. Chevy Chase Canyon is super convenient for that lifestyle, as well.
We love that is it so close to everything, but quiet and tranquil.
